Morning Worship Service on The Lord's Day, July 20, 2025

Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Psalm 85:10

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 103:8-19

Minister: The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever.

People: He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

Minister: For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

People: As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.

Minister: As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.

People: But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.

Unison: The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.

*Hymn of Adoration: “O Worship the King” (No. 2)

1 O worship the King all-glorious above,
O gratefully sing his pow'r and his love;
our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

2 O tell of his might, O sing of his grace,
whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

3 The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your pow'r has founded of old;
has 'stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

4 Your bountiful care what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air; it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills; it descends to the plain;
and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

5 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail;
your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

6 O measureless Might! Ineffable Love!
While angels delight to hymn you above,
the humbler creation, though feeble their lays,
with true adoration shall lisp to your praise.

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer

Unison: Glorious King: I will sing of your steadfast love forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, with your faithfulness all around you? You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them. The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. Blessed are the people who walk in the light of your face, who exult in your name all the day. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. (From Psalm 89)

*Affirmation of Faith Westminster Confession of Faith 5.1

Minister: What do you believe concerning the providence of God?

People: God—the great Creator of all things—upholds, directs, disposes, and governs all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least. He exercises this most wise and holy providence according to his infallible foreknowledge and the free and unchangeable counsel of his own will, to the praise of the glory of his wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy.

Unison: Thanks be to God!

*Gloria (Tune: “Azmon”)

To God all glory, praise, and love
be now and ever given
by saints below and saints above,
the Church in earth and heaven.

New Testament Reading: Mark 2:23-28

*Hymn of Praise: “O Lord Most High” (No. 48, Tune: “As the Hart Longs”)

1 O Lord Most High, with all my heart
your wondrous works I will proclaim;
I will be glad and give you thanks
and sing the praises of your name.

2 The Lord, the everlasting King,
is seated on his judgment throne;
the righteous Judge of all the world
will make His perfect justice known.

3 Jehovah will a refuge prove,
a refuge strong for all oppressed,
a safe retreat, where weary souls
in troubled times may surely rest.

4 All they, O Lord, that know your name
their confidence in you will place,
for you have ne’er forsaken them
who earnestly have sought your face.

5 Sing praises to the Lord Most High,
to him who does in Zion dwell;
declare his mighty deeds abroad,
his deeds among the nations tell.

The Prayers of Intercession

Unison: Almighty, incomprehensible but prayer-hearing God: We bless you that you have made us capable of knowing you, the author of all being; of bearing your likeness, the perfection of all beauty; of enjoying you, the source of all happiness. We come to you in the midst of our difficulties, necessities and distresses. We need the same counsel, defense, and comfort we found at our beginning. Continue the gentleness of your goodness towards us, and whether we wake or sleep, let your presence go with us and your blessing attend us; in the name and for the sake of Jesus, our Redeemer and great High Priest. Amen.

Minister: I pray for your people throughout the world; for our denomination; for this church; and for all ministers and missionaries, especially for the staff of The Women’s Refuge, the board and staff of Care Net, Amjad and Sarah in London, the Lee family FAU, the Mugaris in Zimbabwe, and Mike Osborne with Standing Stone Ministries. I pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world. I pray for the Church.

People: We pray for the poor, the sick, the bereaved, the burdened, and for the widows, orphans and prisoners. Please help those in any need or trouble.

Minister: We pray for those who do not know Christ and for those who seek a deeper knowledge of Him. May they find and be found by Him.

People: We pray for all of our children and future generations which will be born to them. May the knowledge of the Lord fill the earth through them.

Minister: We pray that God would grant us grace to glorify Christ in our own day.

Unison: Lord, hear our prayers.

Pastoral Prayer

Words of Encouragement

Minister: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

*Hymn of Preparation: “Children of the Heavenly Father” (No. 131)

1. Children of the heav'nly Father,
Safely in his bosom gather;
Nesting bird nor star in heaven
Such a refuge e'er was given.

2. God his own does tend and nourish;
In his holy courts they flourish.
From all evil things he spares them;
In his mighty arms he bears them.

3. Neither life nor death shall ever
from the Lord his children sever;
Unto them his grace he showeth,
And their sorrows all he knoweth.

4. Praise the Lord in joyful numbers;
Your protector never slumbers;
At the will of your Defender,
Every foeman must surrender.

5. Though he giveth or he taketh
God his children ne’er forsaketh;
his the loving purpose solely
to preserve them pure and holy.

6. More secure is no one ever
than the loved ones of the Savior;
not yon star on high abiding
nor the bird in home-nest hiding.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; Amen.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: 1 Samuel 21:1-6

Minister: This is the Word of God.

Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!

*The Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “Mercy Triumphs over Judgment” (Pastor Mike Osborne)

*Hymn of Response: “Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder” (No. 172, Tune: “Irby”)

1 Let us love and sing and wonder,
let us praise the Savior's name!
He has hushed the law's loud thunder,
he has quenched Mount Sinai's flame;
he has washed us with his blood,
he has brought us nigh to God.

2 Let us love the Lord who bought us,
pitied us when enemies,
called us by his grace, and taught us,
gave us ears and gave us eyes:
he has washed us with his blood,
he presents our souls to God.

3 Let us sing, though fierce temptation
threaten hard to bear us down!
For the Lord, our strong salvation,
holds in view the conqu'ror's crown;
he who washed us with his blood,
soon will bring us home to God.

4 Let us wonder; grace and justice
join, and point to mercy's store;
when through grace in Christ our trust is,
justice smiles, and asks no more:
he who washed us with his blood,
has secured our way to God.

5 Let us praise, and join the chorus
of the saints enthroned on high;
here they trusted him before us,
now their praises fill the sky:
"You have washed us with your blood;
You are worthy, Lamb of God!"
