Unison: Most High God, the universe with all its myriad creatures is yours—made by your word, upheld by your power, governed by your will. But you are also the Father of mercies, the God of all grace, the bestower of comfort, the protector of the saved. You have given us your Son, our savior, Jesus Christ. We come to you in his name, pleading his perfect righteousness, his complete obedience, his suffering, his shed blood, his death, and his resurrection. We thank you that in him, we no longer dread condemnation; in him we are delivered from the power of sin; in him we live in the hope of heaven. Amen.

Minister: What is it to pray in the name of Christ?

People: To pray in the name of Christ is, in obedience to his command, and in confidence on his promises, to ask mercy for his sake; not by bare mentioning of his name, but by drawing our encouragement to pray, and our boldness, strength, and hope of acceptance in prayer, from Christ and his mediation.

Minister: Why are we to pray in the name of Christ?

People: The sinfulness of man, and, for that reason, his distance from God being so great, that we can have no access into his presence without a mediator; and there being none in heaven or earth appointed to, or fit for, that glorious work but Christ alone, we are to pray in no other name but his only.

Corporate Confession

Unison: Holy Lord, I have sinned times without number, and been guilty of pride and unbelief, of failure to find your mind in your Word, of neglect to seek you in my daily life. My transgressions and shortcomings present me with a list of accusations, but I bless you that they will not stand against me, for all have been laid on Christ. Go on to subdue my corruptions and grant me grace to live above them. Let not the passions of the flesh nor lusts of the mind bring my spirit into subjection, but may you rule over me in liberty and power, through Jesus Christ our one Lord, Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
