At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 34:1-3
Minister: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Unison: Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
*Hymn of Adoration: “Join All the Glorious Names” (No. 301)
1 Join all the glorious names
of wisdom, love, and pow'r,
that ever mortals knew,
that angels ever bore:
all are too poor to speak his worth,
too poor to set my Savior forth.
2 Great Prophet of my God,
my tongue would bless thy name:
by thee the joyful news
of our salvation came,
the joyful news of sins forgiv'n,
of hell subdued, and peace with heav'n.
3 Jesus, my great High Priest,
offered his blood and died;
my guilty conscience seeks
no sacrifice beside:
his pow'rful blood did once atone
and now it pleads before the throne.
4 Thou art my Counselor,
my pattern, and my Guide,
and thou my Shepherd art;
O keep me near thy side;
nor let my feet e'er turn astray
to wander in the crooked way.
5 My Savior and my Lord,
my Conqu'ror and my King,
thy scepter and thy sword,
thy reigning grace, I sing:
thine is the pow'r; behold I sit
in willing bonds beneath thy feet.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation
Unison: O Lord, your name is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe. Your name is majestic; it is glorious; it is to be feared and to be praised. For you are the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation. And now, Lord, we approach you in the powerful name of Jesus—our Savior and Redeemer, who took the punishment which we, the guilty, deserve and who secured for us forgiveness, justification, and eternal life. Amen.
*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 122
Minister: What is the first petition of the Lord’s Prayer?
People: Hallowed be your name. That is: Grant us first of all that we may rightly know you, and sanctify, glorify, and praise you in all your works, in which shine forth your almighty power, wisdom, goodness, righteousness, mercy, and truth. Grant us also that we may so direct our whole life–our thoughts, words, and actions–that your name is not blasphemed because of us but always honored and praised.
Unison: Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
*Gloria (Tune: “Regent Square”)
Glory be to him who loved us, washed us from all sin and stain!
Glory be to him who bought us, made us kings with him to reign!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise the Lamb that once was slain!
Psalter Reading: Psalm 118
Minister: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
People: Let Israel say: “His love endures forever.”
Minister: Let the house of Aaron say: “His love endures forever.”
People: Let those who fear the Lord say: “His love endures forever.”
Minister: In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free.
People: The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid; What can man do to me?
Minister: The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
People: I will look in triumph on my enemies.
Minister: It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
People: It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
Minister: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
People: They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
Minister: They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns;
People: in the name of the Lord I cut them off.
Minister: I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me.
People: The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
Minister: Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous.
People: “The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!
Minister: “The Lord’s right hand is lifted high;
People: “the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”
Minister: I will not die but live, and will proclaims what the Lord has done.
People: The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death.
Minister: Open for me the gates of righteousness;
People: I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
Minister: This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter.
People: I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.
Minister: The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;
People: the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Minister: This is the day the Lord has made;
People: let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Minister: O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success.
People: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
Minister: The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us.
People: With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.
Minister: You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you.
People: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Hymn of Confession: “At the Name of Jesus” (No 163)
1 At the name of Jesus ev'ry knee shall bow,
ev'ry tongue confess him King of Glory now.
'Tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord,
who from the beginning was the mighty Word.
2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight,
all the angel faces, all the hosts of light,
thrones and dominations, stars upon their way,
all the heav'nly orders in their great array.
3 Humbled for a season to receive a name
from the lips of sinners unto whom he came,
faithfully he bore it spotless to the last,
brought it back victorious, when from death he passed.
4 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue
all that is not holy, all that is not true:
crown him as your Captain in temptation's hour:
let his will enfold you in its light and pow'r.
5 Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again,
with his Father's glory, with his angel train;
for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow,
and our hearts confess him King of glory now.
Prayer of Confession
Minister: Father of mercy, Hear us for Jesus’ sake. We are sinful in our closest walk with you, and it is only by your mercy that we continue to breathe and live. By grace through faith, we are reconciled to you and brought into your great love. Though we stand before you as guilty sinners, you have reckoned us innocent in Christ. Thank you that Christ has been merciful to us and for us, so that now we are clothed in his beautiful righteousness.
People: Father, we confess that we are not pure.
Minister: Our minds are full of self-exalting, angry, and bitter thoughts. Our lips are impure, and we have sinned often with our bodies. Thank you for the purity of your Son that adorns us each day of our lives.
People: Father, we confess that we are not humble.
Minister: We love to exalt ourselves and enjoy the praise and admiration of those around us. Father, forgive us for our relentless, powerful pride and self-worship. Thank you for the humility of your Son, who became a servant, enduring deep humiliation and pain to rescue arrogant sinners like us. Thank you for giving us his obedience, and counting us humble in him.
People: Holy Spirit, we cannot grow or persevere in purity and humility unless you work continually in us. Teach us to walk in humble dependence upon you, and may Jesus Christ be exalted in our minds and hearts. Let us see him in all his glory, and make us grateful that the mighty Prince of Peace loved and rescued us. Amen.
From Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration by Duguid and Houk
Private Confession
Pastoral Prayer
Assurance of Pardon
Minister: He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. (I Peter 2:22-25)
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds” (No. 647, Tune: “Dundee”)
1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
in a believer's ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
and drives away his fear.
2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
and calms the troubled breast;
'tis manna to the hungry soul,
and to the weary rest.
3 Dear Name! the rock on which I build,
my shield and hiding place,
my never-failing treas'ry filled
with boundless stores of grace;
4 Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
my Prophet, Priest, and King,
my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
accept the praise I bring.
5 Weak is the effort of my heart,
and cold my warmest thought;
but when I see thee as thou art,
I'll praise thee as I ought.
6 Till then I would thy love proclaim
with every fleeting breath;
and may the music of thy name
refresh my soul in death.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 21:1-11
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Your King Is Coming to You, Humble” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response: “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” (No. 235)
1 All glory, laud, and honor
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring!
Thou art the King of Israel,
thou David's royal Son,
who in the Lord's name comest,
the King and blessed One!
2 The people of the Hebrews
with palms before thee went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before thee we present:
to thee, before thy passion,
they sang their hymns of praise;
to thee, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
3 Thou didst accept their praises;
accept the prayers we bring,
who in all good delightest,
thou good and gracious King!
All glory, laud, and honor
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring!
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
Invitation and Instructions
All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.
For those who prefer, the outer ring of the tray is grape juice. The bread is gluten free.
Please hold the bread and cup until all have been served so that we may partake together.
*Departing Hymn: “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” (No. 455)
1 And can it be that I should gain
an int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2 'Tis myst'ry all! Th'Immortal dies:
who can explore his strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
let angel minds inquire no more. [Refrain]
3 He left his Father's throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
humbled himself (so great his love!)
and bled for all his chosen race!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for, O my God, it found out me! [Refrain]
4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay
fast bound in sin and nature's night;
thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and followed thee. [Refrain]
5 No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine!
Alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th'eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. [Refrain]
