Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 29:1-4, 10-11
Minister: Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones; ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
People: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Minister: The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters.
People: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
Minister: The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
People: May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace!
Unison: Come, let us worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness!
*Hymn of Adoration: “Come, Thou Almighty King” (No. 101)
1 Come, thou Almighty King,
help us thy name to sing,
help us to praise.
Father, all glorious,
o'er all victorious,
come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.
2 Come, thou Incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword,
our prayer attend.
Come, and thy people bless,
and give thy Word success;
Spirit of holiness,
on us descend.
3 Come, Holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of pow'r.
4 To the great One in Three
eternal praises be,
hence evermore.
His sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer
Unison: King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God: To you be honor and glory forever and ever! We praise you, Eternal Father, for your Son, the Incarnate Word. We praise you, our Great Savior, for you humbled yourself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. But death could not hold you. You rose from the grave! And now you are highly exalted, and your name is above all other names. So at your name, Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. And all will cry out, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” In your mighty name we pray. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism, No. 115
Minister: If in this life no one can keep the ten commandments perfectly, why does God have them preached so strictly?
People: First, that throughout our life we may more and more become aware of our sinful nature, and therefore seek more eagerly the forgiveness of sins and righteousness in Christ. Second, that we may be zealous for good deeds and constantly pray to God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, that he may more and more renew us after God's image, until after this life we reach the goal of perfection.
*Gloria Patri (Tune: “Gloria Patri, Greatorex”)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
The Revelation of God’s Will: Ex. 20:1-17; Mt. 22:37-40
Unison: “And God spoke all these words saying: ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Minister: You shall have no other gods before me.
People: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Minister: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
People: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
Minister: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
People: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Minister: You shall not murder.
People: You shall not commit adultery.
Minister: You shall not steal.
People: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Minister: You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’”
Unison: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, mind and strength…and your neighbor as yourself.”
*Hymn of Confession: “God, Be Merciful to Me” (No. 486)
1 God, be merciful to me,
on thy grace I rest my plea;
plenteous in compassion thou,
blot out my transgressions now;
wash me, make me pure within,
cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin.
2 My transgressions I confess,
grief and guilt my soul oppress;
I have sinned against thy grace
and provoked thee to thy face;
I confess thy judgment just,
speechless, I thy mercy trust.
3 I am evil, born in sin;
thou desirest truth within.
thou alone my Savior art,
teach thy wisdom to my heart;
make me pure, thy grace bestow,
wash me whiter than the snow.
4 Broken, humbled to the dust
by thy wrath and judgment just,
let my contrite heart rejoice
and in gladness hear thy voice;
from my sins O hide thy face,
blot them out in boundless grace.
5 Gracious God, my heart renew,
make my spirit right and true;
cast me not away from thee,
let thy Spirit dwell in me;
thy salvation's joy impart,
steadfast make my willing heart.
6 Sinners then shall learn from me
and return, O God, to thee;
Savior, all my guilt remove,
and my tongue shall sing thy love;
touch my silent lips, O Lord,
and my mouth shall praise accord.
Corporate Confession
Unison: Almighty and most merciful God and Father: we have erred and strayed from your ways; like lost sheep we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; we have offended against your holy laws; we have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and, apart from Jesus Christ, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us; spare those, O God, who confess their faults; restore those who are penitent according to your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, sober and righteous life to the glory of your holy Name and the salvation of our own souls. Amen.
Silent Confession
Pastoral Prayer
Assurance of Pardon
Unison: For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
Isaiah 57:15
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art” (No. 168)
1 I greet thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
my only trust and Savior of my heart,
who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray thee from our hearts all cares to take.
2 Thou art the King of mercy and of grace,
reigning omnipotent in ev'ry place:
so come, O King, and our whole being sway;
shine on us with the light of thy pure day.
3 Thou art the Life, by which alone we live,
and all our substance and our strength receive;
O comfort us in death's approaching hour,
strong-hearted then to face it by thy pow'r.
4 Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness,
no harshness hast thou and no bitterness:
make us to taste the sweet grace found in thee
and ever stay in thy sweet unity.
5 Our hope is in no other save in thee;
our faith is built upon thy promise free;
O grant to us such stronger hope and sure
that we can boldly conquer and endure.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Psalm 16
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Rejoicing in the King’s Inheritance” (Rev. Michael Glodo)
*Hymn of Response: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” (No. 252)
1 When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ my God:
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down:
did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
*The Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregation standing, if able.
