The Morning Service on the Lord's Day,

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,
namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (Hebrews 2:9)

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 46

Minister: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble;

People: Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.

Minister: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

People: The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Unison: Come, let us sing and praise our God!

*Hymn of Adoration: “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” (No. 92)

1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and pow'r are great;
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

2 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing;
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he,
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

3 And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

4 That Word above all earthly pow'rs,
no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer

Unison: Our Great Savior, we praise you. And we thank you that you humbled yourself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. But death could not hold you. You rose from the grave! And now you are highly exalted, and your name is above all other names. So at your name, Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. And all will cry out, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” In your mighty name we pray. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 40

Minister: Why was it necessary for Christ to humble himself even unto death?

People: Because of the justice and truth of God, satisfaction for our sins could be made in no other way than by the death of the Son of God.

Unison: And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

*Gloria (Tune: “To God Be the Glory”)

To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that we may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he has done!

New Testament Reading: Acts 2:22-36

*Hymn of Response: “Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus” (No. 176, Tune: “Ode to Joy”)

1 Hail, thou once despised Jesus!
Hail, thou Galilean King!
Thou didst suffer to release us:
thou didst free salvation bring.
Hail, thou agonizing Savior,
bearer of our sin and shame!
By thy merits we find favor;
life is given through thy name.

2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed,
all our sins were on thee laid;
by almighty love anointed,
thou hast full atonement made.
All thy people are forgiven
through the virtue of thy blood;
opened is the gate of heaven,
peace is made 'twixt man and God.

3 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory,
there forever to abide;
all the heav'nly hosts adore thee,
seated at thy Father's side.
There for sinners thou art pleading;
there thou dost our place prepare;
ever for us interceding
till in glory we appear.

4 Worship, honor, pow'r, and blessing
thou art worthy to receive:
loudest praises, without ceasing,
meet it is for us to give.
Help, ye bright angelic spirits,
bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
help to sing our Savior's merits,
help to chant Immanuel's praise!

Words of Encouragement

Minister: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:4-6)

Unison: Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

*Hymn of Praise: “I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art” (No. 168)

1 I greet thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
my only trust and Savior of my heart,
who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray thee from our hearts all cares to take.

2 Thou art the King of mercy and of grace,
reigning omnipotent in ev'ry place:
so come, O King, and our whole being sway;
shine on us with the light of thy pure day.

3 Thou art the Life, by which alone we live,
and all our substance and our strength receive;
O comfort us in death's approaching hour,
strong-hearted then to face it by thy pow'r.

4 Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness,
no harshness hast thou and no bitterness:
make us to taste the sweet grace found in thee
and ever stay in thy sweet unity.

5 Our hope is in no other save in thee;
our faith is built upon thy promise free;
O grant to us such stronger hope and sure
that we can boldly conquer and endure.
