Morning Worship Service on The Lord's Day, September 22, 2024
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 117
Minister: Praise the Lord, all nations!
People: Extol him, all peoples!
Minister: For great is his steadfast love toward us,
People: and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Unison: Praise the Lord!
*Hymn of Adoration: “All the Hail Power of Jesus’ Name” (No. 297)
1 All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall,
let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
Refrain:
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
crown him, and crown him Lord of all!
2 Crown him, ye martyrs of your God
who from his altar call,
who from his altar call;
extol the Stem of Jesse's rod, (Refrain)
3 Ye seed of Israel's chosen race,
ye ransomed of the fall,
ye ransomed of the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace, (Refrain)
4 Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
the wormwood and the gall,
the wormwood and the gall,
go, spread your trophies at his feet, (Refrain)
5 Let ev'ry kindred, ev'ry tribe,
on this terrestrial ball,
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe, (Refrain)
6 O that with yonder sacred throng
we at his feet may fall,
we at his feet may fall!
we'll join the everlasting song, (Refrain)
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer
Unison: O Lord, with my whole heart I give you thanks. I recount your wonderful deeds—creating, protecting, preserving, providing, redeeming, restoring, comforting, blessing—all to the glory of your name. I will proclaim your wondrous works, yet they are more than can be told. And your thoughts toward me—how vast is their sum! I am poor and needy, yet you think on me and you care for me. You are my help and my deliverer. You are my strength, my song, and my salvation. Blessed are all who find refuge in you. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith (Heidelberg Catechism 31)
Minister: Why is Jesus called Christ, that is, Anointed?
People: Because he has been ordained by God the Father, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, to be our chief Prophet and Teacher, who has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption; our only High Priest, who by the one sacrifice of his body has redeemed us, and who continually intercedes for us before the Father; and our eternal King, who governs us by his Word and Spirit, and who defends and preserves us in the redemption obtained for us.
Unison: Thanks be to God!
Hallelujah (Tune: “Ode to Joy”)
Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
He is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed;
Over all God reigns forever, through all ages He is King;
Unto Him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing.
Psalter Reading: Psalm 110
Minister: The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
People: The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies.
Minister: Your troops will be willing on your day of battle.
People: Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth.
Minister: The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
People: The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
Minister: He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
People: He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.
*Hymn of Response: “We Come, O Christ, to You” (No. 181)
1 We come, O Christ, to you,
true Son of God and man,
by whom all things consist,
in whom all life began:
in you alone we live and move,
and have our being in your love.
2 You are the Way to God,
your blood our ransom paid;
in you we face our Judge
and Maker unafraid.
Before the throne absolved we stand,
your love has met your law’s demand.
3 You are the living Truth!
All wisdom dwells in you,
the Source of every skill,
the one eternal TRUE!
O great I AM! In you we rest,
sure answer to our every quest.
4 You only are true Life,
to know you is to live
the more abundant life
that earth can never give:
O risen Lord! We live in you:
in us each day your life renew!
5 We worship you, Lord Christ,
our Savior and our King,
to you our youth and strength
adoringly we bring:
so fill our hearts, that all may view
your life in us, and turn to you! (CCLI 3036374)
The Prayers of Intercession
Unison: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Minister: Father, we pray for your people throughout the world; for our denomination; for this church; and for all ministers and missionaries. We pray especially for the Mahands in England, the Lees with RUF, and the Mugaris in Zimbabwe, and Mike Osborne with Standing Stone.
People: We pray for the leaders of our nation and all who hold authority, that they would govern according to your truth, and especially that they would resolve to protect the lives of the unborn and defenseless.
Minister: We pray for the world, especially that you would bring peace and justice and deliverance to nations and peoples oppressed by war, by disaster, by tyranny, and by evil. We pray for our brothers and sisters in these places as they offer the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ amid great danger and opposition.
People: We pray for our children and future generations which will be born to them. May the knowledge of you, Lord, fill the earth through them.
Minister: May we have grace to glorify Christ in our own day.
Unison: Lord, hear our prayers.
Pastoral Prayer
Words of Encouragement
Minister: Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
Unison: Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “My Faith Has Found a Resting Place” (No. 468)
1 My faith has found a resting place,
from guilt my soul is freed;
I trust the ever-living One,
his wounds for me shall plead.
Refrain:
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea,
it is enough that Jesus died,
and that he died for me.
2 Enough for me that Jesus saves,
this ends my fear and doubt;
a sinful soul I come to him,
he’ll never cast me out. [Refrain]
3 My heart is leaning on the Word,
the written Word of God:
salvation by my Savior’s name,
salvation thro' his blood. [Refrain]
4 My great Physician heals the sick,
the lost he came to save;
for me his precious blood he shed,
for me his life he gave. [Refrain]
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Lasst Uns Erfreuen”)
Let all things their Creator bless;
And worship Him in humbleness; Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise, Praise the Father, praise the Son;
And praise the Spirit, three in one;
O Praise Him! O Praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 13:53-58
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Hearing But Not Understanding” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response: “O Jesus, We Adore Thee” (No.255)
1 O Jesus, we adore thee,
upon the cross, our King!
We bow our hearts before thee,
thy gracious name we sing.
That name hath brought salvation,
that name in life our stay,
our peace, our consolation,
when life shall fade away.
2 Yet doth the world disdain thee,
still passing by the cross;
Lord, may our hearts retain thee;
all else we count but loss.
Ah, Lord, our sins arraigned thee,
and nailed thee to the tree:
our pride, our Lord, disdained thee;
yet deign our hope to be.
3 O glorious King, we bless thee,
no longer pass thee by;
O Jesus, we confess thee
the Son enthroned on high.
Lord, grant to us remission;
life through thy death restore;
yea, grant us the fruition
of life forevermore.
*The Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregational standing, if able.
If you would like someone to pray with you, an Elder will be available at the front of the sanctuary following the service.
