The Lord’s Day, January 28, 2024
10:30 AM Morning Service
“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him.” (Philippians 3:7-8)
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 145:1-3, 21
Minister: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.
People: Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.
Minister: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
People: My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
*Hymn of Adoration: “How Great Thou Art” (No. 44)
1 O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hands hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed;
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
2 When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; [Refrain]
3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross my burden gladly bearing
he bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain]
4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim: "My God, how great thou art!" [Refrain]
(CCLI 3036374)
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation
O Fountain of All Good, nothing exceeds your power. Nothing is too great for you to do. Nothing is too good for you to give. Infinite is your might, boundless your love, limitless your grace, glorious your saving name. We praise you for sinners repenting, prodigals restored, backsliders reclaimed, Satan’s captives released, blind eyes opened, broken hearts bound up, the despondent cheered, the self-righteous stripped, the ignorant enlightened, and saints built up in their holy faith. We ask great things of a great God. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. (Adapted from “The Great God” in The Valley of Vision)
*Affirmation of Faith: Westminster Larger Confession 76
Minister: What is repentance that leads to life?
People: Repentance that leads to life is a saving grace, worked in the heart of a sinner by the Spirit and the Word of God, by which, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, and awareness of God’s mercy in Christ to those who are penitent, the sinner so grieves for and hates his sins that he turns away from them all to God, purposing and working constantly to walk with God in all the ways of new obedience.
*Gloria (Tune: “To God Be the Glory”)
To God be the glory, great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that we may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son, and give him the glory, great things he has done!
Psalter Reading: Psalm 96
Minister: Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
People: Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation from day to day.
Minister: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
People: For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.
Minister: For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.
People: Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.
Minister: Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
People: Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts.
Minister: Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
People: tremble before him, all the earth.
Minister: Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
People: The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the people with equity.
Minister: Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
People: let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
Minister: Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth.
People: He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth.
Hymn of Praise: “Praise the Lord, the Almighty” (No. 53)
1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near,
join me in glad adoration.
2 Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e'er have been
granted in what he ordaineth?
3 Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee!
Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
ponder anew what the Almighty will do,
if with his love he befriend thee.
4 Praise to the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee,
decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee.
How oft in grief hath not he brought thee relief,
spreading his wings to o'ershade thee!
5 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again;
gladly fore'er we adore him.
The Prayers of Intercession
Unison: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Minister: Father, we pray for your people throughout the world; for our denomination; for this church; and for all ministers and missionaries. We pray especially for the Mahands in England, the Mays in Peru, the Lees with RUF, and the Mugaris in Zimbabwe.
People: We pray for the leaders of our nation and all who hold authority, that they would govern according to your truth, and especially that they would resolve to protect the lives of the unborn and defenseless.
Minister: We pray for the world, especially that you would bring peace and justice and deliverance to nations and peoples oppressed by war, by disaster, by tyranny, and by evil. We pray for our brothers and sisters in these places as they offer the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ amid great danger and opposition.
Unison Lord, hear our prayer.
Silent Prayer
Pastoral Prayer
Words of Assurance
Minister: The Lord is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
People: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken” (SH No. 4, verses 1-3, 5)
1 Jesus, I my cross have taken,
All to leave and follow Thee;
Destitute, despised, forsaken,
Thou from hence my All shalt be.
Perish every fond ambition,
All I've sought or hoped or known;
Yet how rich is my condition!
God and heav'n are still my own.
2 Let the world despise and leave me,
They have left my Savior, too.
Human hearts and looks deceive me;
Thou art not, like them, untrue.
Oh while Thou dost smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might,
Foes may hate and friends disown me;
Show Thy face, and all is bright.
3 Man may trouble and distress me,
'Twill but drive me to Thy breast;
Life with trials hard may press me,
Heaven will bring me sweeter rest.
Oh, 'tis not in grief to harm me
While Thy love is left to me;
Oh, 'twere not in joy to charm me
5 Soul, then know thy full salvation;
Rise o'er sin and fear and care;
Joy to find in every station,
Something still to do or bear.
Think what Spirit dwells within thee;
Think what Father's smiles are thine,
think that Jesus died to win thee;
Child of heaven, canst thou repine?
6 Haste thee on from grace to glory,
Armed by faith and winged by prayer;
Heaven's eternal days before thee,
God's own hand shall guide thee there.
Soon shall close thy earthly mission,
Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days,
Hope shall change to glad fruition,
Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 8:18-22
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Consider the Cost” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response: “Take My Life” (No. 585)
1 Take my life, and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in ceaseless praise,
let them flow in ceaseless praise.
2 Take my hands, and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.
3 Take my voice, and let me sing,
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.
4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use
ev'ry pow'r as thou shalt choose,
ev'ry pow'r as thou shalt choose.
5 Take my will, and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.
6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take my self, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.

Hebrews calls us to fix our gaze on the resurrected Christ as we run the race set before us. In Him alone we have hope and salvation.
