Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 118:22-25, John 12:13
Minister: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
People: This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
Minister: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
People: Save us, we pray, O LORD; O LORD, we pray, give us success!
Unison: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!
*Hymn of Adoration: “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” (No. 235)
1 All glory, laud, and honor
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring!
Thou art the King of Israel,
thou David's royal Son,
who in the Lord's name comest,
the King and blessed One!
2 The people of the Hebrews
with palms before thee went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before thee we present:
to thee, before thy passion,
they sang their hymns of praise;
to thee, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
3 Thou didst accept their praises;
accept the prayers we bring,
who in all good delightest,
thou good and gracious King!
All glory, laud, and honor
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring!
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer
Unison: O God, Praise waits for you, and to render it is my noblest exercise. This is your due from all your creatures, for all your works display your attributes and fulfill your designs. You are King of kings and Lord of lords. At your pleasure empires rise and fall. All your works praise you and your saints bless you. Let me be numbered with the holy ones, resemble them in character and condition, and sit with them at Jesus’ feet. In Jesus’ name we come to you. Amen.
*Confession of Faith: The Westminster Shorter Catechism, 26
Minister: How does Christ execute the office of a king?
People: Christ executes the office of a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.
*Gloria (Tune: “Lauda Anima”)
Glory to the King of angels, glory to the church’s King,
Glory to the King of nations; heav'n and earth your praises bring!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! To the King of glory sing!
Psalter Reading: Psalm 45
Minister: My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king:
People: my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
Minister: You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever.
People: Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.
Minister: In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds.
People: Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet.
Minister: Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
People: You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.
Minister: All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.
People: Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
Minister: Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear. Forget your people and your father’s house.
People: The kings is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.
Minister: The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift, men of wealth will seek your favor.
People: All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold.
Minister: In embroidered garments she is led to the king; her virgin companions follow her and are brought to you.
People: They are led in with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the king.
Minister: Your sons will take the place of your fathers; you will make them princes throughout the land.
People: I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.
Hymn of Response: “Fairest Lord Jesus” (No. 170)
1 Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor,
thou, my soul's glory, joy, and crown.
2 Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,
robed in the blooming garb of spring:
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
who makes the woeful heart to sing.
3 Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,
and all the twinkling, starry host:
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
than all the angels heav'n can boast.
4 Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
now and for evermore be thine.
Prayer of Confession
Unison: Loving Father, on this Palm Sunday, we remember how your Son entered Jerusalem, the city that later rejected him. And we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem’s. Our faith is often more show than substance. Our hearts are in need of cleansing. Please, have mercy on us, and forgive our sins. And may we know you, fear you, love you, and serve you as we ought. We pray in the name of Jesus—the Suffering Servant, the Risen Savior, our Coming King. Amen.
Silent Prayer
Pastoral Prayer
Words of Assurance
Minister: Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. (Psalm 149:2, 4)
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Join All the Glorious Names” (No. 301)
1 Join all the glorious names
of wisdom, love, and pow'r,
that ever mortals knew,
that angels ever bore:
all are too poor to speak his worth,
too poor to set my Savior forth.
2 Great Prophet of my God,
my tongue would bless thy name:
by thee the joyful news
of our salvation came,
the joyful news of sins forgiv'n,
of hell subdued, and peace with heav'n.
3 Jesus, my great High Priest,
offered his blood and died;
my guilty conscience seeks
no sacrifice beside:
his pow'rful blood did once atone
and now it pleads before the throne.
4 Thou art my Counselor,
my pattern, and my Guide,
and thou my Shepherd art;
O keep me near thy side;
nor let my feet e'er turn astray
to wander in the crooked way.
5 My Savior and my Lord,
my Conqu'ror and my King,
thy scepter and thy sword,
thy reigning grace, I sing:
thine is the pow'r; behold I sit
in willing bonds beneath thy feet.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; Amen
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Luke 19:28-40
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Blessed Is the King” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response and Preparation: “At the Lamb’s High Feast” (No. 420)
1 At the Lamb's high feast we sing
praise to our victorious King,
who has washed us in the tide
flowing from his pierced side;
praise we him whose love divine
gives his sacred blood for wine,
gives his body for the feast,
Christ the victim, Christ the priest.
2 Where the paschal blood is poured,
death's dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel's hosts triumphant go
through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
paschal victim, paschal bread;
with sincerity and love
eat we manna from above.
3 Mighty victim from the sky,
pow'rs of hell beneath thee lie;
death is conquered in the fight,
thou hast brought us life and light:
hymns of glory and of praise,
risen Lord, to thee we raise;
holy Father, praise to thee,
with the Spirit, ever be.
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
Invitation and Instructions
All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.
For those who prefer, the outer ring of the tray is grape juice. The bread is gluten free. Please hold the bread and cup until all have been served so that we may partake together.
*Departing Hymn: “Shout, for the Blessed Jesus Reigns!” (No. 369)
1 Shout, for the blessed Jesus reigns;
through distant lands his triumphs spread;
and sinners, freed from endless pains,
own him their Savior and their Head.
2 He calls his chosen from afar,
they all at Zion's gates arrive;
those who were dead in sin before
by sovereign grace are made alive.
3 Gentiles and Jews his laws obey;
nations remote their off'rings bring,
and unconstrained their homage pay
to their exalted God and King.
4 O may his holy church increase,
his Word and Spirit still prevail,
while angels celebrate his praise,
and saints his growing glories hail.
5 Loud hallelujahs to the Lamb,
from all below, and all above!
In lofty songs exalt his name,
in songs as lasting as his love.
*Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregation standing, if able.
The deacons encourage you to consider supporting their work among those in need by giving an offering as you leave worship this morning. This offering will be used to provide assistance to those in our congregation and wider community who have financial and material needs. Please use the mercy box to make your gift. Many thanks to you!
