“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.” I Samuel 15:22
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Exodus 34:5-8, Psalm 86:8,11
Minister: The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with [Moses] there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed,
People: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands,
Minister: forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
People: And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.
Unison: There is none like you among the gods, O Lord. Unite my heart to fear your name.
*Hymn of Adoration: “Join All the Glorious Names” (No. 301)
1 Join all the glorious names
of wisdom, love, and pow'r,
that ever mortals knew,
that angels ever bore:
all are too poor to speak his worth,
too poor to set my Savior forth.
2 Great Prophet of my God,
my tongue would bless thy name:
by thee the joyful news
of our salvation came,
the joyful news of sins forgiv'n,
of hell subdued, and peace with heav'n.
3 Jesus, my great High Priest,
offered his blood and died;
my guilty conscience seeks
no sacrifice beside:
his pow'rful blood did once atone
and now it pleads before the throne.
4 Thou art my Counselor,
my pattern, and my Guide,
and thou my Shepherd art;
O keep me near thy side;
nor let my feet e'er turn astray
to wander in the crooked way.
5 My Savior and my Lord,
my Conqu'ror and my King,
thy scepter and thy sword,
thy reigning grace, I sing:
thine is the pow'r; behold I sit
in willing bonds beneath thy feet.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation
Unison: We love you, O LORD, for you are our rock and our fortress and our deliverer, our God, our rock in whom we take refuge, our shield, the horn of our salvation, our stronghold. We call upon you, who are worthy of all praise, and we are saved from our enemies. Your way, O LORD, is perfect. Your word is true. Be exalted, O God of our salvation. We will praise you among the nations and sing to your name. In the name of Jesus we come to you. Amen.
From Psalm 18
*Affirmation of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 4
Minister: What does God's law require of us?
People: Christ teaches us this in a summary in Matthew 22: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
*Gloria Patri Tune: Gloria Patri (Greatorex)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen. Amen.
The Revelation of God’s Will: Romans 12:9-21
Minister: Let love be genuine.
People: Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Minister: Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
People: Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Minister: Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
People: Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Minister: Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.
People: Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
Minister: Live in harmony with one another.
People: Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
Minister: Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.
People: If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Minister: Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
People: To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Unison: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
*Hymn of Confession: “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” (No. 455)
1 And can it be that I should gain
an int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2 'Tis myst'ry all! Th'Immortal dies:
who can explore his strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
let angel minds inquire no more. [Refrain]
3 He left his Father's throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
humbled himself (so great his love!)
and bled for all his chosen race!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for, O my God, it found out me! [Refrain]
4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay
fast bound in sin and nature's night;
thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and followed thee. [Refrain]
5 No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine!
Alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th'eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. [Refrain]
Prayer of Confession
Unison: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Silent Confession
Pastoral Prayer
Assurance of Pardon
Minister: If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O LORD, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with Him is plentiful redemption. Psalm 130:3-4, 7
People: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name.
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” (No. 535)
1 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free;
rolling as a mighty ocean
in its fullness over me.
Underneath me, all around me,
is the current of thy love;
leading onward, leading homeward,
to thy glorious rest above.
2 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Spread his praise from shore to shore;
how he loveth, ever loveth,
changeth never, nevermore;
how he watches o'er his loved ones,
died to call them all his own;
how for them he intercedeth,
watcheth o'er them from the throne.
3 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Love of ev'ry love the best:
'tis an ocean vast of blessing,
'tis a haven sweet of rest.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
'tis a heav'n of heav'ns to me;
and it lifts me up to glory,
for it lifts me up to thee.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology Tune: "Lasst Uns Erfreuen"
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;
O Praise Him! O Praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures Matthew 23:25-36
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “The Seven Woes: Part Two” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response: “From All that Dwell below the Skies” (No. 7)
1 From all that dwell below the skies
let the Creator’s praise arise;
let the Redeemer’s name be sung
through every land, by every tongue.
2 In every land begin the song;
to every land the strains belong.
In cheerful sound all voices raise
and fill the world with joyful praise.
3 Eternal are your mercies, Lord;
eternal truth attends your word.
Your praise shall sound from shore to shore
till suns rise and set no more.
*The Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregation standing, if able.
