Morning Worship Service on The Lord's Day, October 4, 2026

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, for by His wounds you were healed.
I Peter 2:24

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Revelation 5:12

Minister: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,

People: to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!

Unison: Amen!

*Hymn of Adoration: “Crown Him with Many Crowns” (SH No. 185)

Crown him with many crowns,
the Lamb upon his throne;
hark, how the heav'nly anthem drowns
all music but its own!
Awake, my soul, and sing
of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless King
through all eternity.

Crown him the Son of God,
before the worlds began,
and ye who tread where he hath trod,
crown him the Son of Man.
Who ev'ry grief hath known
that wrings the human breast,
and takes and bears them for his own,
that all in him may rest.

Crown him the Lord of life,
who triumphed o'er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife
for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing,
who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.

Crown him the Lord of heav'n,
enthroned in worlds above;
crown him, the King to whom is giv'n
the wondrous name of Love.
Crown him with many crowns,
as thrones before him fall;
crown him, ye kings, with many crowns,
for he is King of all.

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation

Unison: Gracious Father, we praise you and thank you for Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man; the eternal Word, by whom made all things were made; the Light of the World, full of grace and truth; the Man of Sorrows, acquainted with grief; the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for us; the perfect Lamb, slain for us; our Great High Priest, interceding for us; our Risen Lord, preparing our eternal home; our Coming King, worthy of all honor and glory and blessing! Amen!

*Confession of Faith: Westminster Larger Catechism 49

Minister: How did Christ humble himself in his death?

People: Christ humbled himself in his death, in that having been betrayed by Judas, forsaken by his disciples, scorned and rejected by the world, condemned by Pilate, and tormented by his persecutors; having also conflicted with the terrors of death, and the powers of darkness, felt and borne the weight of God’s wrath, he laid down his life as an offering for sin, enduring the painful, shameful, and cursed death of the cross.

Unison: Praise be to God!

*Gloria (Tune: “Lauda Anima”)

Glory be to him who loved us,
washed us from each spot and stain;
glory be to him who bought us,
made us kings with him to reign;
glory, honor, power, blessing,
to the Lamb that once was slain.

The Revelation of God’s Will: Romans 12:9-21

Minister: Let love be genuine.

People: Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Minister: Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

People: Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Minister: Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

People: Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Minister: Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

People: Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Minister: Live in harmony with one another.

People: Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.

Minister: Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

People: If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Minister: Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

People: To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Unison: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Minister: Have you obeyed the Lord in all that he has commanded?

People: No, for we have sinned against him in thought, word, and deed.

Minister: Then let us confess our sins, for with the Lord there is mercy and abundant pardon.

*Hymn of Confession: “Rock of Ages” (SH No. 405)

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.
Let the water and the blood
from thy wounded side which flowed
be of sin the double cure:
save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring;
simply to thy cross I cling.
Naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die!

While I draw this fleeting breath,
when my eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

Corporate Confession

Unison: Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before you our sinful nature, prone to evil and slothful in good, and all our shortcomings and offenses. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. But, O Lord, have mercy upon us, who are ashamed and sorry for all that has displeased you. Teach us to hate our errors; cleanse us from our secret faults; and forgive our sins—for the sake of your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, enable us to live in your light and walk in your ways, according to the commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Silent Meditation and Confession

Pastoral Prayer

Assurance of Pardon

Minister: But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. (Romans 5:8-9)

*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “God of Grace” (SH No. 156)

God of grace, amazing wonder,
irresistible and free;
oh, the miracle of mercy,
Jesus reaches down to me.
God of grace, I stand in wonder,
as my God restores my soul.
His own blood has paid my ransom;
awesome cost to make me whole.

God of grace, who loved and knew me
long before the world began;
sent my Savior down from heaven—
perfect God and perfect man.
God of grace, I trust in Jesus;
I'm accepted as his own.
Ev'ry day new grace sustains me,
as I lean on him alone.

God of grace, I stand astounded,
cleansed, forgiven, and secure.
All my fears are now confounded,
and my hope is ever sure.
God of grace, now crowned in glory,
where one day I'll see your face;
and forever I'll adore you
in your everlasting grace.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

Oh, don't you want to go to that gospel feast,
That promised land where all is peace?
(“Deep River”)

*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; Amen

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures:Matthew 27:45-56

Minister: This is the Word of God.

Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!

*The Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “The Death of Jesus” (Rev. Seth Wallace)

*Hymn of Response: “Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed” (SH No. 243)

Alas, and did my Savior bleed,
and did my Sov'reign die?
Would he devote that sacred head
for such a worm as I?

Was it for crimes that I had done
he groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity, grace unknown,
and love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide
and shut its glories in,
when Christ the mighty Maker died
for man the creature's sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face
while his dear cross appears;
dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
and melt mine eyes in tears.

But drops of grief can ne'er repay
the debt of love I owe;
here, Lord, I give myself away;
'tis all that I can do.
