Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
Expand, my soul, with holy joy. Hosannahs be thy blest employ.
Salvation thy eternal theme, and swell the song with Jesus' name!
*Call to Worship: Psalm 145:1-7
Minister: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.
People: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
Minister: On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
People: They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
Minister: and I will declare your greatness.
People: They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
Unison: Come, let us sing of our God!
*Hymn of Adoration: “I Sing the Almighty Power of God” (TH No. 119)
1 I sing th'almighty pow'r of God
that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad,
and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained
the sun to rule the day;
the moon shines full at his command
and all the stars obey.
2 I sing the goodness of the Lord
that filled the earth with food;
he formed the creatures with his word,
and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how your wonders are displayed
where'er I turn mine eye,
if I survey the ground I tread
or gaze upon the sky!
3 There's not a plant or flow'r below
but makes your glories known;
and clouds arise and tempests blow,
by order from your throne;
while all that borrows life from you
is ever in your care,
and everywhere that man can be,
you, God, are present there.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer
Unison: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! The heavens declare your glory; the skies proclaim your handiwork. The sun and moon and stars praise your name, for at your command they were created. When we consider the heavens, what is man that you are mindful of him? For we are but dust. Like flowers, we flourish and then fade. But you are from everlasting to everlasting; you are unchanging. Your love is steadfast; your mercies never come to an end. And in your mercy, you set your love upon us. Your Son became flesh and dwelt among us. And with his blood, he redeemed us—to the praise of your glory! How majestic is your name!
*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 26
Minister: What do you believe when you say: I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?
People: That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth and all that is in them, and who still upholds and governs them by his eternal counsel and providence, is, for the sake of Christ his Son, my God and my Father. In him I trust so completely as to have no doubt that he will provide me with all things necessary for body and soul, and will also turn to my good whatever adversity he sends me in this life of sorrow. He is able to do so as almighty God, and willing also as a faithful Father.
Unison: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
*Hallelujah (Tune: “Ode to Joy”)
Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Heav’n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain;
He delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain.
Psalter Reading: Psalm 138
Minister: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart.
People: before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
Minister: I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness,
People: for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
Minister: When I called you answered me;
People: you made me bold and stouthearted.
Minister: May all the kings of the earth praise you, O Lord, when the hear the words of your mouth.
People: May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great.
Minister: Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly,
People: but the proud he knows from afar.
Minister: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life;
People: you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
Minister: The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
People: your love, O Lord, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands.
*Hymn of Response: “O Father, You Are Sovereign” (TH No. 75)
1 O Father, you are sovereign
in all the worlds you made;
your mighty word was spoken
and light and life obeyed.
Your voice commands the seasons
and bounds the ocean’s shore,
sets stars within their courses
and stills the tempests’ roar.
2 O Father, you are sovereign
in all affairs of man;
no pow'rs of death or darkness
can thwart Your perfect plan.
All chance and change transcending,
supreme in time and space,
you hold your trusting children
secure in your embrace.
3 O Father, you are sovereign
the Lord of human pain,
transmuting earthly sorrows
to gold of heav'nly gain.
All evil over-ruling,
as none but Conqu'ror could,
your love pursues its purpose —
our souls’ eternal good.
4 O Father, you are sovereign!
We see you dimly now,
but soon before your triumph
earth’s every knee shall bow.
With this glad hope before us
our faith springs up anew:
our sovereign Lord and Savior,
we trust and worship you!

The Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving
Unison: Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this day, protecting us from dangers and uncertainties, both known and unknown. Preserve us with your mighty power that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity. Drive from this place, O Lord, all snares of the enemy and, in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose. In the name and by the power of him who lay down in the grave and rose again for us, Jesus Christ our Lord, Redeemer and Friend. Amen.
Minister: Father, we thank you for your works in Creation, for the beauty, splendor and majesty of the world in which we live.
People: We praise you for your works of Providence by which we are sustained, preserved, provided for and blessed.
Minister: We praise you specifically for the gifts of food, friendship, family, and health.
People: We praise and thank you for your marvelous works in Redemption—that in the Lord, Jesus Christ, you have sought us, found us, saved us and brought us safely home to yourself.
Minister: For all your surpassing goodness to us, especially for the hope of your certain return, of eternal life and of the new heaven and the new earth, we worship and adore you.
Unison: Lord, hear our prayers of thanksgiving.
Silent Prayer of Thanksgiving
Pastoral Prayer
Words of Encouragement
Minister: How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. (Psalm 36:7-9)
People: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “My Heart Is Filled with Thankfulness” (SH No. 663)
1 My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who bore my pain;
who plumbed the depths of my disgrace and gave me life again;
who crushed my curse of sinfulness and clothed me in his light,
and wrote his law of righteousness with pow'r upon my heart.
2 My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who walks beside;
who floods my weaknesses with strength and causes fears to fly;
whose ev'ry promise is enough for ev'ry step I take,
sustaining me with arms of love and crowning me with grace.
3 My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who reigns above,
whose wisdom is my perfect peace, whose ev'ry thought is love.
For ev'ry day I have on earth is given by the King;
so I will give my life, my all, to love and follow him.

*Hymn of Response: “May the Mind of Christ My Savior” (TH No. 644)
1 May the mind of Christ my Savior
live in me from day to day,
by his love and pow'r controlling
all I do and say.
2 May the Word of God dwell richly
in my heart from hour to hour,
so that all may see I triumph
only through his pow'r.
3 May the peace of God my Father
rule my life in everything,
that I may be calm to comfort
sick and sorrowing.
4 May the love of Jesus fill me
as the waters fill the sea;
him exalting, self abasing,
this is victory.
5 May his beauty rest upon me
as I seek the lost to win,
and may they forget the channel,
seeing only him.
