The Lord’s Day, June 9, 2024

10:30 AM Morning Service

And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 116:1-2, 5-7

Minister:   I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

People:      Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

Minister:   The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.

People:      Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

Unison:     Come, let us praise the Lord!

*Hymn of Adoration: “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art” (No. 168)

1 I greet thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
my only trust and Savior of my heart,
who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray thee from our hearts all cares to take.

2 Thou art the King of mercy and of grace,
reigning omnipotent in ev'ry place:
so come, O King, and our whole being sway;
shine on us with the light of thy pure day.

3 Thou art the Life, by which alone we live,
and all our substance and our strength receive;
O comfort us in death's approaching hour,
strong-hearted then to face it by thy pow'r.
4 Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness,
no harshness hast thou and no bitterness:
make us to taste the sweet grace found in thee
and ever stay in thy sweet unity.

5 Our hope is in no other save in thee;
our faith is built upon thy promise free;
O grant to us such stronger hope and sure
that we can boldly conquer and endure.

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer

Heavenly Father, my faith is in you, my expectations are from you, my love goes out toward you. I believe you, accept your Word, yield to your will, rely on your promises, and trust in your providence. I do not need signs and wonders to believe, for your Word is sure truth. I have cast my anchor in the port of your peace, knowing that the present and future are in your nail-pierced hands. You are so good, wise, just, and holy, that no mistake is possible to you. You are the fountain of all law; what you command is mine to obey. I yield to your sovereignty all that I am and have; do with me as you will.  In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Adapted from “Repose” in The Valley of Vision

*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 120

Minister:   Why has Christ commanded us to address God as our Father?

People:      To awaken in us at the very beginning of our prayer that childlike reverence and trust toward God which should be basic to our prayer: God has become our Father through Christ and will much less deny us what we ask of him in faith than our fathers would refuse us earthly things.

Unison:     Thanks be to God!

*Gloria Patri (Tune: Gloria Patri, Greatorex)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be;

World without end. Amen. Amen

Psalter Reading: Psalm 62

Minister:   My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.

People:      He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

Minister:   How long will you assault a man?

People:      Would all of you throw him down—this leaning wall, this tottering fence?

Minister:   They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies.

People:      With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.

Minister:   Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.

People:      He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

Minister:   My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

People:      Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Minister:   Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie.

People:      if weighed on a balance, they are nothing together they are only a breath.

Minister:   Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods;

People:      though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Minister:   One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard; that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving.

People:      Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

Hymn of Response: “Be Still, My Soul” (No. 689)

1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in ev'ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heav'nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
to guide the future as he has the past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
and all is darkened in the vale of tears,
then shall you better know his love, his heart,
who comes to soothe your sorrow and your fears.
Be still, my soul: your Jesus can repay
from his own fullness all he takes away.

4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Public Confession

O Lord of all creation, the stars in their courses obey your command to shine. The fish swim in the sea, the birds fly in the air, and the cattle graze upon the earth. All your creatures submit to your design, but humankind. Forgive us for our presumption upon your kindness, patience, and your will, and for forgetting that we are but a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. You are the one who sustains us, yet in arrogance we pursue our own designs for our lives, our marriages, our children, our vocations and our wealth. Humble our hearts to seek first your kingdom and your will for your glory and not our own. Make us dependent upon your mercy, teaching us to worship and to wonder at every good gift you send.

Private Confession

Pastoral Prayer

Promise of the Gospel

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. (I Peter 3:18)

*Hymn of Praise: “My Hope Is in the Lord” (No. 523)

1 My Hope is in the Lord,
who gave Himself for me
And paid the price of all my sin at Calvary

Refrain
For me He died; For me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.

2 No merit of my own
His anger to suppress,
My only hope is found in Jesus' righteousness

3 And now for me He stands
before the Father's throne;
He shows His wounded hands and names me as His own.

4 His grace has planned it all,
'Tis mine but to believe
And recognize His work of love and Christ receive.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  Amen!

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 11:25-30

Minister:   This is the Word of God.

Unison:     Thanks be to God for his Word!

*The Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “I Will Give You Rest” (Rev. Seth Wallace)

Hymn of Confession: “Behold the Lamb” (SH No. 7, verses 1-3)

1 Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away,
Slain for us – and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith
Find forgiveness at the cross.
So we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace
Around the table of the King.

2 The body of our Savior Jesus Christ,
Torn for you – eat and remember
The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life
Paid the price to make us one.
So we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of love
Around the table of the King.

3 The blood that cleanses every stain of sin,
Shed for you – drink and remember
He drained death’s cup that all may enter in
To receive the life of God.
So we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of grace
Around the table of the King.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

   Invitation and Instructions

All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.

For those who prefer, the outer ring of the tray is grape juice. The bread is gluten free.

Please hold the bread and cup until all have been served so that we may partake together.

*Departing Hymn: “Behold the Lamb” (SH No. 7, verse 4)

And so with thankfulness and faith we rise
To respond, – and to remember
Our call to follow in the steps of Christ
As His body here on earth.
As we share in His suffering
We proclaim Christ will come again!
And we’ll join in the feast of heaven
Around the table of the King

                                                              (CCLI 3036374)

*The Benediction
