Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 50:1-6
Minister: The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
People: Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest.
Minister: He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
People: The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge!
*Hymn of Adoration: “God Is Known among His People” (No. 66)
1 God is known among his people,
every mouth his praises fill;
from of old he has established
his abode on Zion's hill;
there he broke the sword and arrow,
bade the noise of war be still.
2 Excellent and glorious are you,
with your trophies from the fray;
you have slain the mighty warriors,
wrapped in sleep of death are they;
when your anger once is risen,
who can stand in that dread day?
3 When from heav'n your sentence sounded,
all the earth in fear was still,
while to save the meek and lowly
God in judgment wrought his will;
e'en the wrath of man shall praise you,
your designs it shall fulfil.
4 Vow and pay unto Jehovah,
him your God forever own;
all men, bring your gifts before him
worship him, and him alone;
mighty kings obey and fear him,
princes bow before his throne.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation
O Lord of hosts, you are exalted in justice, holy in righteousness. Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. You are to be feared, for who can stand before you when your anger is aroused? Therefore, we praise you and give you thanks. For we once lived under your wrath, transgressing your laws, following the ways of the world, gratifying the evil desires of our flesh. But while we were still sinners, Christ died for us—the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to you, our holy God. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith Westminster Confession of Faith 6.6
Minister: What do you believe concerning sin?
People: Every sin—both original and actual—is a transgression of the righteous law of God and contrary to it. Therefore, every sin in its own nature brings guilt upon the sinner, on account of which he is bound over to the holy wrath of God and the curse of the law. Consequently, he is subject to death, with all miseries—spiritual, temporal, and eternal.
*Gloria (Tune: “Regent Square”)
Glory be to Him who loved us, washed us from each spot and stain:
Glory be to Him who bought us, made us kings with Him to reign!
Glory, glory, glory, glory, to the Lamb that once was slain!
The Revelation of God’s Will Ex. 20:1-17; Mt. 22:37-40
Unison: “And God spoke all these words saying: ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Minister: You shall have no other gods before me.
People: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Minister: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
People: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Minister: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
People: You shall not murder.
Minister: You shall not commit adultery.
People: You shall not steal.
Minister: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
People: You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’”
Unison: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, mind and strength…and your neighbor as yourself.”
*Hymn of Response: “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched” (No. 472)
1 Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
full of pity joined with pow'r:
he is able, he is able,
he is able,
he is willing; doubt no more;
he is willing; doubt no more.
2 Come, ye needy, come and welcome,
God's free bounty glorify;
true belief and true repentance,
ev'ry grace that brings you nigh,
without money, without money,
without money,
come to Jesus Christ and buy;
come to Jesus Christ and buy.
3 Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
bruised and broken by the fall;
if you tarry till you're better,
you will never come at all:
not the righteous, not the righteous,
not the righteous–
sinners Jesus came to call;
sinners Jesus came to call.
4 Let not conscience make you linger,
nor of fitness fondly dream;
all the fitness he requireth
is to feel your need of him;
this he gives you, this he gives you,
this he gives you;
'tis the Spirit's rising beam;
'tis the Spirit's rising beam.
5 Lo! th'incarnate God, ascended,
pleads the merit of his blood;
venture on him, venture wholly,
let no other trust intrude:
none but Jesus, none but Jesus,
none but Jesus
can do helpless sinners good,
can do helpless sinners good.
Corporate Confession
Holy Lord, I have sinned times without number, and been guilty of pride and unbelief, of failure to find your mind in your Word, of neglect to seek you in my daily life. My transgressions and shortcomings present me with a list of accusations, but I bless you that they will not stand against me, for all have been laid on Christ. Go on to subdue my corruptions, and grant me grace to live above them. Let not the passions of the flesh nor lusts of the mind bring my spirit into subjection, but may you rule over me in liberty and power, through Jesus Christ our one Lord, Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
Silent Confession
Pastoral Prayer
Assurance of Pardon
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1, 3, 4
*Hymn of Praise: “Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ” (No. 524)
1 Thy works, not mine, O Christ,
speak gladness to this heart;
they tell me all is done;
they bid my fear depart.
Refrain:
To whom, save thee, who canst alone
for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
2 Thy pains, not mine, O Christ,
upon the shameful tree,
have paid the law's full price
and purchased peace for me. [Refrain]
3 Thy cross, not mine, O Christ,
has borne the awful load
of sins that none in heav'n
or earth could bear but God. [Refrain]
4 Thy righteousness, O Christ,
alone can cover me:
no righteousness avails
save that which is of thee. [Refrain]
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; Amen
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 11:20-24
The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “The Power of God unto Repentance” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response: “Rock of Ages” (No. 499)
1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy riven side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure,
cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.
2 Not the labors of my hands
can fulfil thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears for ever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.
3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to thy cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the Fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.
4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyelids close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.
*Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregation standing, if able.
