The Lord’s Day, May 5, 2024

10:30 AM Morning Service

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:10)

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: I Peter 1:3-9

Minister:   Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

People:      According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Minister:   to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

People:      In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,

Minister:   so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

People:      Though you have not seen him, you love him.

Minister:   Though you do not now see him, you believe in him

Unison:     and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.

*Hymn of Adoration: “I Know That My Redeemer Lives—Glory Hallelujah!” (No. 281)

1 I know that my Redeemer lives–
glory, hallelujah!
What comfort this sweet sentence gives–
glory, hallelujah!

Refrain:
Shout on, pray on, we're gaining ground–
glory, hallelujah!
The dead's alive and the lost is found–
glory, hallelujah!

2 He lives, he lives, who once was dead–
glory, hallelujah!
He lives, my everlasting Head–
glory, hallelujah! [Refrain]

3 He lives, to bless me with his love–
glory, hallelujah!
He lives to plead for me above–
glory, hallelujah! [Refrain]

4 He lives, all glory to his name!-
glory, hallelujah!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same-
glory, hallelujah! [Refrain]

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation

Great God and Father of our Risen Savior, blessed be your name forever and ever! For you have blessed us beyond all comprehension—all to the praise of your glorious grace. In Christ, you have chosen us, redeemed us, forgiven us, adopted us, given us an inheritance, sealed us with your Holy Spirit, and lavished on us grace upon grace. Open our hearts and minds to comprehend your great love for us, to know the hope to which you’ve called us, and to live by the immeasurable greatness of your power toward us—the power that raised Jesus from the dead. In his mighty name we come to you. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 45

Minister:   How does Christ's resurrection benefit us?

People:      First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he could make us share in the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death. Second, by his power we too are raised up to a new life. Third, Christ's resurrection is to us a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection.

Unison:     Thanks be to God!

*Gloria (Tune: Gloria Patri, Greatorex)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen. Amen.

The Revelation of God’s Will: Ex. 20:1-17; Mt. 22:37-40

Unison:     “And God spoke all these words saying: ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Minister:   You shall have no other gods before me.

People:      You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Minister:   You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

People:      Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Minister:   Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

People:      You shall not murder.

Minister:   You shall not commit adultery.

People:      You shall not steal.

Minister:   You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

People:      You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’”

Unison:     “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, mind and strength…and your neighbor as yourself.”

Reception of New Members

Hymn of Response: “We Are God’s People” (No. 355)

1 We are God's people, the chosen of the Lord,

Born of His Spirit, established by His Word;

Our cornerstone is Christ alone,

And strong in Him we stand:

O let us live transparently

And walk heart to heart and hand in hand.

2 We are God’s loved ones, the Bride of Christ our Lord,

For we have known it, the love of God outpoured;

Now let us learn how to return

The gift of love once given:

O let us share each joy and care,

And live with a zeal that pleases Heaven.

3 We are the Body of which the Lord is Head,

Called to obey Him, now risen from the dead;

He wills us be a family,

Diverse yet truly one:

O let us give our gifts to God,

And so shall his work on earth be done.

4 We are a temple, the Spirit’s dwelling place,

Formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God’s grace;

We die alone, for on its own

Each member loses fire:

Yet joined in one the flame burns on

To give warmth and light, and to inspire.

Prayer of the People

Gracious Father, before your Son died, he prayed for us, and we echo his prayer. May all of us who believe in your Son be one, even as you and your Son are one. May the love with which you loved your Son dwell in us. May your truth sanctify us. And though we are in the world, may we not be of the world. Though we are hated by the world, may we be guarded from the evil one. And one day, may we be with your Son and behold his glory. In his name we pray. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer

Words of Encouragement

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ….For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. (Ephesians 3:13, 17-18)

*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Arise, My Soul, Arise” (No. 305)

1 Arise, my soul, arise,
shake off your guilty fears:
the bleeding Sacrifice
in my behalf appears:
before the throne my Surety stands,
before the throne my Surety stands,
my name is written on his hands.

2 He ever lives above,
for me to intercede,
his all-redeeming love,
his precious blood to plead;
his blood atoned for ev'ry race,
his blood atoned for ev'ry race,
and sprinkles now the throne of grace.

3 Five bleeding wounds he bears,
received on Calvary;
they pour effectual prayers,
they strongly plead for me.
"Forgive him, O forgive," they cry,
"Forgive him, O forgive," they cry,
"nor let that ransomed sinner die!"

4 My God is reconciled;
his pard'ning voice I hear;
he owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear;
with confidence I now draw nigh,
with confidence I now draw nigh,
and "Father, Abba, Father!" cry.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: Old Hundredth)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  Amen!

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 10:16-23

Minister:   This is the Word of God.

Unison:     Thanks be to God for his Word!

*Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “When They Persecute You” (Rev. Seth Wallace)

*Hymn of Response: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” (No. 252)

1 When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ my God:
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down:
did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

*The Benediction

Postlude

*Denotes congregational standing, if able.
