The Lord’s Day, April 28, 2024

10:30 AM Morning Service

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news,

who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation,

 who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

Isaiah 52:7

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 71:15-19, 23

Minister:   My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.

People:      With the mighty deeds of the Lord God I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone.

Minister:   O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

People:      Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?

Unison:     My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.

*Hymn of Adoration: “All Praise to God, Who Reigns Above” ( No. 4)

1 All praise to God, who reigns above,
the God of all creation,
the God of wonders, pow'r, and love,
the God of our salvation!
With healing balm my soul he fills,
the God who every sorrow stills.
To God all praise and glory!

2 What God's almighty pow'r hath made
his gracious mercy keepeth;
by morning dawn or evening shade
his watchful eye ne'er sleepeth;
within the kingdom of his might,
lo, all is just and all is right.
To God all praise and glory!

3 I cried to him in time of need:
Lord God, O hear my calling!
For death he gave me life indeed
and kept my feet from falling.
For this my thanks shall endless be;
O thank him, thank our God, with me.
To God all praise and glory!

4 The Lord forsaketh not his flock,
his chosen generation;
he is their refuge and their rock,
their peace and their salvation.
As with a mother's tender hand
he leads his own, his chosen band.
To God all praise and glory!

5 Ye who confess Christ's holy name,
to God give praise and glory!
Ye who the Father's pow'r proclaim,
to God give praise and glory!
All idols underfoot be trod,
the Lord is God! The Lord is God!
To God all praise and glory!

6 Then come before his presence now
and banish fear and sadness;
to your Redeemer pay your vow
and sing with joy and gladness:
Though great distress my soul befell,
the Lord, my God, did all things well,
To God all praise and glory!

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Prayer

All knowing and ever-present God: In you the enslaved find redemption, the guilty pardon, the unholy renovation. In you is everlasting strength for the weak, unsearchable riches for the needy, treasures of wisdom and knowledge for the ignorant, fullness for the empty. At your gracious call we hear, come, take, receive and apply mercy sufficient for all our need. All this we have in your dear Son, Jesus, whom we praise and adore, and in whose name we pray. Amen

Adapted from “The Name of Jesus” in The Valley of Vision

*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 21

Minister:   What is true faith?

People:      True faith is a sure knowledge whereby I accept as true all that God has revealed to us in his Word. At the same time, it is a firm confidence that not only to others, but also to me, God has granted forgiveness of sins, everlasting righteousness, and salvation, out of mere grace, only for the sake of Christ's merits. This faith the Holy Spirit works in my heart by the gospel.

Unison:     Thanks be to God!

*Gloria (Tune: “To God Be the Glory”)

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father through Jesus the Son

And give him the glory, great things he has done!

Psalter Reading: Psalm 145

Minister:   I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.

People:      Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

Minister:   Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;

People:      his greatness no one can fathom.

Minister:   One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.

People:      They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

Minister:   They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

People:      They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

Minister:   The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and rich in love.

People:      The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

Minister:   All you have made will praise you, O Lord; your saints will extol you.

People:      They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,

Minister:   so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

People:      Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations.

Minister:   The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.

People:      The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

Minister:   The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.

People:      You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Minister:   The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.

People:      The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Minister:   He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

People:      The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

Minister:   My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.

People:      Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

Hymn of Praise: “Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim” ( No. 165)

1 Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name, all victorious, of Jesus extol;
his kingdom is glorious and rules over all.

2 God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
and still he is nigh– his presence we have.
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.

3 Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud and honor the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

4 Then let us adore, and give him his right,
all glory and pow'r, and wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing, with angels above,
and thanks never ceasing for infinite love.

The Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving

Unison:     Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this day, protecting us from dangers and uncertainties, both known and unknown. Preserve us with your mighty power that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity. Drive from this place, O Lord, all snares of the enemy and, in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose. In the name and by the power of Him who lay down in the grave and rose again for us, Jesus Christ our Lord, Redeemer and Friend.  Amen.

Minister:   Father, we thank you for your works in Creation, for the beauty, splendor and majesty of the world in which we live.

People:      We praise you for your works of Providence by which we are sustained, preserved, provided for and blessed.

Minister:   We praise you specifically for the gifts of food, friendship, family, and health.

People:      We praise and thank you for your marvelous works in Redemption—that in the Lord, Jesus Christ, you have sought us, found us, saved us and brought us safely home to yourself.

Minister:   For all your surpassing goodness to us, especially for the hope of your certain return, of eternal life, and of the new heaven and the new earth, we worship and adore you.

Unison:     Lord, hear our prayers of thanksgiving.

Pastoral Prayer

Words of Encouragement

Minister:   Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2)

People:            Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus!” (No. 176, Tune: “Ode to Joy”)

1 Hail, thou once despised Jesus!
Hail, thou Galilean King!
Thou didst suffer to release us:
thou didst free salvation bring.
Hail, thou agonizing Savior,
bearer of our sin and shame!
By thy merits we find favor;
life is given through thy name.

2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed,
all our sins were on thee laid;
by almighty love anointed,
thou hast full atonement made.
All thy people are forgiven
through the virtue of thy blood;
opened is the gate of heaven,
peace is made 'twixt man and God.

3 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory,
there forever to abide;
all the heav'nly hosts adore thee,
seated at thy Father's side.
There for sinners thou art pleading;
there thou dost our place prepare;
ever for us interceding
till in glory we appear.

4 Worship, honor, pow'r, and blessing
thou art worthy to receive:
loudest praises, without ceasing,
meet it is for us to give.
Help, ye bright angelic spirits,
bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
help to sing our Savior's merits,
help to chant Immanuel's praise!

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: “Lasst Uns Erfreuen”)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;

O Praise Him! O Praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 10:5-15

Sermon: “Go, in Faith” (Rev. Seth Wallace)

*Hymn of Response: “We Rest on Thee” (No. 449)

1 We rest on thee - our shield and our defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
strong in thy strength, safe in thy keeping tender,
"We rest on thee, and in thy name we go."
strong in thy strength, safe in thy keeping tender,
"We rest on thee, and in thy name we go."

2 Yea, "in thy name," O Captain of salvation!
In thy dear name, all other names above;
Jesus our righteousness, our sure foundation,
our Prince of glory and our King of love.
Jesus our righteousness, our sure foundation,
our Prince of glory and our King of love.

3 "We go" in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
and needing more each day thy grace to know:
yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on thee, and in thy name we go.”
yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on thee, and in thy name we go.”

4 "We rest on thee" - our shield and our defender!
Thine is the battle, thine shall be the praise;
when passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
victors - we rest with thee, through endless days.
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
victors - we rest with thee, through endless days.

*Benediction
