The Lord’s Day, March 10, 2024

The Lord’s Day, March 10, 2024

10:30 AM Morning Service

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. (Philippians 4:4)

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 13:5-6

Minister:   I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

People:      I will sing to the Lord because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Unison:     Come, let us praise the God of our salvation!

*Hymn of Adoration: “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” (No. 604)

1 Rejoice, ye pure in heart,
rejoice, give thanks, and sing:
your festal banner wave on high,
the cross of Christ your King.

Refrain:
Rejoice, rejoice,
rejoice, give thanks, and sing.

2 Bright youth and snow-crowned age,
strong men and maidens meek,
raise high your free, exulting song;
God's wondrous praises speak. [Refrain]

3 With all the angel choirs,
with all the saints on earth,
pour out the strains of joy and bliss,
true rapture, noblest mirth! [Refrain]
4 Yes, on through life's long path,
still chanting as ye go;
from youth to age, by night and day,
in gladness and in woe. [Refrain]

5 At last the march shall end,
the wearied ones shall rest;
the pilgrims find their Father's house,
Jerusalem the blest. [Refrain]

6 Then on, ye pure in heart,
rejoice, give thanks, and sing;
your glorious banner wave on high,
the cross of Christ your King. [Refrain]

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation

Blessed Father: All your ways are mercy, and all your mercies lead to and end in my delight. For my joy, you have given me a Redeemer, sent the Comforter, multiplied your promises, shown me my future happiness and given me a living fountain. You are preparing joy for me, and me for joy.  Grant us, as we worship you, a fresh apprehension of your grace that our hearts might leap toward our eternal Sabbath, where the work of redemption, sanctification, preservation, and glorification is finished forever, and where you will rejoice over us with infinite joy.  For the sake of Jesus your Son, we pray.  Amen.

*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 75

Minister:   How does the Lord's supper signify and seal to you that you share in Christ's one sacrifice on the cross and in all his gifts?

People:      In this way: Christ has commanded me and all believers to eat of this broken bread and drink of this cup in remembrance of him. With this command he gave these promises: First, as surely as I see with my eyes the bread of the Lord broken for me and the cup given to me, so surely was his body offered for me and his blood poured out for me on the cross. Second, as surely as I receive from the hand of the minister and taste with my mouth the bread and the cup of the Lord as sure signs of Christ's body and blood, so surely does he himself nourish and refresh my soul to everlasting life with his crucified body and shed blood.

Gloria Patri (Tune:  Regent Square)

Glory be to God the Father, glory be to God the Son,

Glory be to God the Spirit: great Jehovah, Three in One!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! while eternal ages run!

Psalter Reading: Psalm 32

Minister:   Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

People:      Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.

Minister:   When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

People:      for day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.

Minister:   Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.

People:      I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”—and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Minister:   Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found:

People:      surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.

Minister:   You are my hiding place;

People:      you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Minister:   I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.

People:      Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

Minister:   Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him.

People:      Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Hymn of Response: “O, Jehovah, Hear My Words” (No. 51)

1 O Jehovah, hear my words,
to my thoughts attentive be;
hear my cry, my King, my God,
I will make my prayer to thee.
With the morning light, O Lord,
thou shalt hear my voice arise,
and expectant I will bring
prayer as morning sacrifice.

2 Thou, Jehovah, art a God
who delightest not in sin;
evil shall not dwell with thee,
nor the proud thy favor win.
Evil-doers thou dost hate,
lying tongues thou wilt defeat;
God abhors the man who loves
violence and base deceit.

3 In the fulness of thy grace
to thy house I will repair;
bowing toward thy holy place,
in thy fear to worship there.
Lead me in thy righteousness,
let my foes assail in vain;
lest my feet be turned aside,
make thy way before me plain.

4 False and faithless are my foes,
in their mouth no truth is found;
deadly are the words they speak,
all their thoughts with sin abound.
Bring, O God, their plans to naught,
hold them guilty in thy sight,
for against thee and thy law
they have set themselves to fight.

5 O let all that trust thy care
ever glad and joyful be;
let them joy who love thy name,
safely guarded, Lord, by thee.
For a blessing from thy store
to the righteous thou wilt yield;
thou wilt compass him about
with thy favor as a shield.

Public Confession

Father, we confess that our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked beyond our comprehension. We are more sinful than we know. But you, Lord, search our hearts and test our minds. Please, forgive our hidden sins and cleanse our hearts. We also confess that our hearts are rebellious, and we often sin willfully, knowingly. Please, Father, forgive us for these presumptuous sins. By the power of your Word and the Holy Spirit, please restrain our evil hearts. Do not let sin have dominion over us. May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight. We come to you, in the name of Jesus, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.

Private Confession

Pastoral Prayer

Words of Assurance

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

(Psalm 130:3-4)

Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Not All the Blood of Beasts” (No. 242)

1 Not all the blood of beasts
on Jewish altars slain,
could give the guilty conscience peace,
or wash away the stain:

2 But Christ, the heav'nly Lamb,
takes all our sins away,
a sacrifice of nobler name
and richer blood than they.

3 My faith would lay her hand
on that dear head of thine,
while like a penitent I stand,
and there confess my sin.
4 My soul looks back to see
the burdens thou didst bear,
when hanging on the cursed tree,
and knows her guilt was there.

5 Believing, we rejoice
to see the curse remove;
we bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
and sing his bleeding love.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: Lasst Uns Erfreuen)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;

O Praise Him! O Praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of the Holy Scriptures: Matthew 9:14-17

Minister:   This is the Word of God.

Unison:     Thanks be to God for his Word!

*The Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “Feasting and Fasting“ (Rev. Seth Wallace)

*Hymn of Response and Preparation: “At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing” (No. 420)

1 At the Lamb's high feast we sing
praise to our victorious King,
who has washed us in the tide
flowing from his pierced side;
praise we him whose love divine
gives his sacred blood for wine,
gives his body for the feast,
Christ the victim, Christ the priest.

2 Where the paschal blood is poured,
death's dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel's hosts triumphant go
through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
paschal victim, paschal bread;
with sincerity and love
eat we manna from above.
3 Mighty victim from the sky,
pow'rs of hell beneath thee lie;
death is conquered in the fight,
thou hast brought us life and light:
hymns of glory and of praise,
risen Lord, to thee we raise;
holy Father, praise to thee,
with the Spirit, ever be.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

Invitation and Instructions

All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.

For those who prefer, the outer ring of the tray is grape juice. The bread is gluten free.

Please hold the bread and cup until all have been served so that we may partake together.

*Departing Hymn: “From All That Dwell below the Skies” (No. 7)

1 From all that dwell below the skies
let the Creator’s praise arise;
let the Redeemer’s name be sung
through every land, by every tongue.

2 In every land begin the song;
to every land the strains belong.
In cheerful sound all voices raise
and fill the world with joyful praise.
3 Eternal are your mercies, Lord;
eternal truth attends your word.
Your praise shall sound from shore to shore
till suns rise and set no more.

*The Benediction

Postlude

*Denotes congregation standing, if able.

The deacons encourage you to consider supporting their work among those in need by giving an offering as you leave worship this morning.  This offering will be used to provide assistance to those in our congregation and wider community who have financial and material needs.  Please use the mercy box to make your gift.  Many thanks to you!

If you would like someone to pray with you, an Elder will be available at the front of the sanctuary following the service.
