The Lord’s Day, February 11, 2024
The Lord’s Day, February 11, 2024
10:30 AM Morning Service
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. (Psalm 33:6-9)
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
The Voluntary for Silent Prayer
*Call to Worship: Psalm 29
Minister: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
People: The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, thunders over many waters.
Minister: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
People: The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
Unison: May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
*Hymn of Adoration: “Be Still, My Soul” (No. 689)
1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in ev'ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heav'nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
to guide the future as he has the past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.
3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
and all is darkened in the vale of tears,
then shall you better know his love, his heart,
who comes to soothe your sorrow and your fears.
Be still, my soul: your Jesus can repay
from his own fullness all he takes away.
4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation
Almighty God, we enter your presence, and here we gain understanding and wisdom and comfort in the midst of a wicked world that grieves and confuses us. We take refuge in your truth. You are with us always; you hold us by the hand; you guide us with your counsel; and you’ll take us to be with you in glory. Whom have we in heaven but you? There is nothing on earth we desire besides you. Our flesh and our heart may fail, but you are the strength of our life and our portion forever. How good it is to draw near to you! Sovereign God, you are our refuge. We will rejoice in you. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
from Psalm 73
*Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, 1 and 4
Minister: What is the chief end of man?
People: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.
Minister: What is God?
People: God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.,
Unison: Thanks be to God!
*Gloria Patri (Tune: “Ode to Joy”)
Glory be to God the Father, and to Christ His Only Son;
Praise we, too, the Holy Spirit, binding all the church as one.
As it was in the beginning, is for now and evermore;
Amen, Amen! Alleluia! Praise to God the Three in One!
Old Testament Reading: Genesis 1
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “I Sing the Almighty Power of God” (No. 119)
1 I sing th'almighty pow'r of God
that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad,
and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained
the sun to rule the day;
the moon shines full at his command
and all the stars obey.
2 I sing the goodness of the Lord
that filled the earth with food;
he formed the creatures with his word,
and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how your wonders are displayed
where'er I turn mine eye,
if I survey the ground I tread
or gaze upon the sky!
3 There's not a plant or flow'r below
but makes your glories known;
and clouds arise and tempests blow,
by order from your throne;
while all that borrows life from you
is ever in your care,
and everywhere that man can be,
you, God, are present there.
Public Confession
Gracious and loving Father, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future filled with hope, in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, our light and our life. Amen.

Promise of the Gospel
If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O LORD, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with Him is plentiful redemption. (Psalm 130:3-4, 7)
*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” (No. 508)
1 Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high:
hide me, O my Savior, hide,
till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last!
2 Other refuge have I none,
hangs my helpless soul on thee;
leave, ah! leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me!
All my trust on thee is stayed,
all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenseless head
with the shadow of thy wing.
3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want;
more than all in thee I find:
raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
heal the sick, and lead the blind.
Just and holy is thy name;
I am all unrighteousness;
false and full of sin I am,
thou art full of truth and grace.
4 Plenteous grace with thee is found,
grace to cover all my sin;
let the healing streams abound;
make and keep me pure within:
thou of life the fountain art,
freely let me take of thee;
spring thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity.
Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings
*Doxology (Tune: Lasst Uns Erfreuen)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;
O Praise Him! O Praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: Matthew 8:23-27
Minister: This is the Word of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!
*The Prayer for Illumination
Sermon: “Power over the Natural Realm” (Rev. Seth Wallace)
*Hymn of Response and Preparation: “Amidst Us Our Beloved Stands” (No. 427)
1 Amidst us our Beloved stands,
and bids us view his pierced hands;
points to the wounded feet and side,
blest emblems of the Crucified.
2 What food luxurious loads the board,
when athis table sits the Lord!
The wine how rich, the bread how sweet,
when Jesus deigns the guests to meet!
3 If now, with eyes defiled and dim,
we see the signs, but see not him;
O may his love the scales displace,
and bid us see him face to face!
4 O glorious Bridegroom of our hearts,
your present smile a heav’n imparts!
O lift the veil, if veil there be,
let every saint your glory see!
Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
Invitation and Instructions
All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.
For those who prefer, the outer ring of the tray is grape juice.
The bread is gluten free.
Please hold the bread and cup until all have been served
so that we may partake together.
*Departing Hymn: “God Moves in a Mysterious Way” (No. 128)
1 God moves in a mysterious way
his wonders to perform;
he plants his footsteps in the sea,
and rides upon the storm.
2 Deep in unfathomable mines
of never-failing skill
he treasures up his bright designs,
and works his sovereign will.
3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
the clouds ye so much dread
are big with mercy, and shall break
in blessings on your head.
4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
but trust him for his grace;
behind a frowning providence
he hides a smiling face.
5 His purposes will ripen fast,
unfolding ev'ry hour;
the bud may have a bitter taste,
but sweet will be the flow'r.
6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
and scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
and he will make it plain.
*Benediction
Postlude
*Denotes congregation standing, if able.
The deacons encourage you to consider supporting their work among those in need by giving an offering as you leave worship this morning. This offering will be used to provide assistance to those in our congregation and wider community who have financial and material needs. Please use the mercy box to make your gift. Many thanks to you!

- Women’s Bible Study
All women of the church are invited to come to Bible Study, which meets here at 10:00 AM every Thursday through March 28. We are studying Better by Jen Wilkin. In this study of Hebrews, we will learn how Christ is the substance of the shadowy truths of the Old Testament, especially Exodus, which we just finished. Discover how he fulfills and completes the work of angels, prophets, priests, and ceremonial laws, establishing a better covenant. Hebrews calls us to fix our gaze on the resurrected Christ as we run the race set before us. In Him alone we have hope and salvation.
Study books may be found on the book table for $15 each. You may deposit cash or a check in the book box and sign your name to the signup sheet, also found on the book table. Thanks! Bring a friend or two!
