Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Morning Worship Service on The Lord's Day, January 11, 2026

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” John 7:37

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

The Voluntary for Silent Prayer

*Call to Worship: Psalm 107:1-9

Minister: Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

People: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble…

Minister: Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.

People: Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.

Minister: Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!

Unison: For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

*Hymn of Adoration: “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” (No. 598)

1 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
hold me with thy pow'rful hand;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
feed me till I want no more,
feed me till I want no more.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through;
strong Deliv'rer, strong Deliv'rer,
be thou still my strength and shield,
be thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side;
songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to thee,
I will ever give to thee.

*Prayer of Adoration and Congregational Invocation

Unison: O God, the Great I AM, we stand in awe of you, with whom one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. You are a mighty God, who, amidst the course of history—the rise and fall of rulers and empires—feels no variableness. Indeed, you are glorious in immortality. So we rejoice that, while men die, you live and reign forever; that, while all creatures are broken reeds, empty cisterns, fading flowers, and withering grass, you are the Rock of Ages, and the Fountain of living waters. Amen.

Adapted from “Infinite and the Finite” in The Valley of Vision

*Affirmation of Faith: Westminster Larger Catechism 7

Minister: What is God?

People: God is a Spirit, in and of himself infinite in being, glory, blessedness, and perfection; all sufficient, eternal, unchangeable, incomprehensible, everywhere present, almighty, knowing all things, most wise, most holy, most just, most merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.

Unison: This God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.

*Gloria Patri (Tune: “Lauda Anima”)

Glory be to God the Father, glory be to God the Son,
glory be to God the Spirit, God Almighty, Three in One!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Glory be to him alone.

Psalter Reading: Psalm 145

Minister: I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.

People: Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

Minister: Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;

People: his greatness no one can fathom.

Minister: One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.

People: They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

Minister: They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

People: They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

Minister: The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in love;

People: The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

Minister: All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you.

People: They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,

Minister: so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

People: Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations.

Minister: The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.

People: The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

Minister: The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.

People: You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Minister: The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

People: He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

Minister: The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

People: My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD.

Minister: Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

*Hymn of Response: “How Great Thou Art” (No. 44)

1 O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hands hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed;

Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

2 When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; [Refrain]

3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross my burden gladly bearing
he bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain]

4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim: "My God, how great thou art!" [Refrain]

Public Confession

Unison: Dear Father, our great Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, we confess our sins before you. We confess that we have not hungered and thirsted after righteousness. We have feasted on the pleasures of the world, but we are unsatisfied. We have sought peace and security in people, in places, in wealth, but we are filled with anxiety. We have forsaken you, the fountain of living waters, and we are spiritually parched. We have built for ourselves cisterns that hold no water, and we are empty. Forgive us for our foolish self-reliance and idolatry. And may we look to you alone, the Fountain of Living Water for all we need. May we hunger and thirst for you, God, for you alone satisfy the deepest longings of our heart. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Private Confession

Pastoral Prayer

Promise of the Gospel

Minister: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. (Psalm 103:2-5)

People: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

*Hymn of Thanksgiving: “As the Hart Longs for Flowing Streams” (No. 662)

1 As the hart longs for flowing streams,
So longs my soul for thee O God.
My soul does thirst for the living God;
When shall I come to see thy face?

2 My tears have fed me day and night,
While men have said, “Where is your God?”
But I recall as my soul pours dry
The days of praise within thy house.

3 Why do I mourn and toil within,
When it is mine to hope in God?
I shall again sing praise to Him;
He is my help He is my God.

Worship of God through Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology (Tune: “Old Hundredth”)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

*Reading of The Holy Scriptures: John 4:1-10

Minister: This is the Word of God.

Unison: Thanks be to God for his Word!

*The Prayer for Illumination

Sermon: “Thirsty?” (Rev. Mike Osborne)

*Hymn of Response and Preparation: “Rock of Ages” (No. 500)

1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy riven side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure,
cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.

2 Not the labors of my hands
can fulfil thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears for ever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to thy cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the Fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyelids close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

Invitation and Instructions
All who have professed faith in Jesus Christ and have been baptized and who are communicant members in good standing in an evangelical church are invited to come to participate in this sacred Sacrament of the Church. This is not a Presbyterian table, and we do not restrict it as such; it is the Lord’s Table. However, the church alone grants access to the table and must guard it from the leaven of unrighteousness (1 Cor. 5:6-8). Therefore, if you have not repented and trusted in Christ or if you are harboring sin in your life or if there is anyone with whom you are not at peace with so far as it depends on you (Rom. 12:18), please do not participate in this meal. We invite you instead to use this time to reflect and ask God to speak to your heart and give you more light and understanding. Children who have not been admitted to the table by the church should also refrain from partaking of the Supper.

*Departing Hymn: “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” (SH No. 10)

1 How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.

2 Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.

3 I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.
